December 2010 Update

groupkids1Among this year’s exciting news is an extremely generous gift by an anonymous donor. With this donation Remember Niger started an endowment for the schools in Niger and is building a new primary school in Aguie. The current school structure in Aguie has walls made of sticks and grass; the new brick school will be a vast improvement!

This was the first year that Remember Niger held two art auction fundraisers to raise money for student and teacher scholarships. We are proud to report that we raised over $15,000! The attendees not only left with special pieces of art created by Nigerien students and local artists, but with a deeper understanding of Remember Niger’s mission and the students we serve.

Our Executive Director, Kara, traveled to Niger twice this year. She spent four weeks during February and March building relationships and discussing the priorities of Remember Niger’s education partner – the Evangelical Church of Niger. In August six volunteers joined Kara in Niger. The seven of them accomplished a great deal during their two weeks there. Most notably they created a media center at the Tsibiri Primary Boarding School with 12 laptop computers and held a three-day intensive computer workshop for the teachers. For many of the teachers this was the first time they had used a computer! We are pleased that the computer lab is being well maintained by a Nigerien computer technician and is getting use by its beneficiaries.

An upcoming trip to Niger by Kara and Ruth, a Remember Niger board member, is planned for late January through mid-February. They look forward to seeing progress on the new school, visiting with teachers and students, renewing friendships, and taking much needed school supplies.

We expect 2011 to be another successful year for Remember Niger. We plan on doubling student and teacher scholarships, completing the construction of the primary school in Aguie and opening an additional media center in Niger with a new group of volunteers. If you would like to help with creation of this media center or assist the Nigerien teachers and students in other ways, we would love to have you join us on our annual trip in August.

Thank you for expanding quality educational opportunities for children in Niger. We wish you a wonderful Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year!
