LAYING THE FOUNDATION
In January, we set an ambitious goal to raise $144,000 for the funding of 4 capital projects at our partner schools in Niger. We knew it was a challenging goal, but with each project being critical for the students, we asked you to give generously. We are thrilled to report that we are only $18,625 away from our goal! Detailed descriptions of each project are available below. Thank you for your generosity!
EXCITING UPDATE! Construction is underway at the Azzel School! Thank you for your support!
6 new classrooms - Azzel Primary School
The Azzel Primary School is situated next to a riverbed, which in recent years has flooded during each rainy season. In 2016, the majority of the classrooms and the school kitchen were destroyed. In 2019, through community and Remember Niger funding, eight classrooms were renovated, but sadly, catastrophic flooding occurred again in 2021. The school and community leaders came to the difficult decision that it is best to relocate to a nearby available site, next to the Azzel Middle School. This decision will ensure the students’ safety and will help prevent costly repairs and rebuilding.
The new school site is located on much higher land and will be safe from flooding. Conveniently, it is next to the middle school. To date, a two-classroom block has been built at the relocation site. However, an additional six classrooms need to be constructed before the school can move. Remember Niger will facilitate the construction of the two 3-classroom buildings in 2023 so that the school will be ready for students for the coming school year. Please donate today. |
3 new classrooms - Guidan Arna Primary School
The Guidan Arna primary school was established in October 2000. The school has grown quickly and is in dire need of new classrooms. Today, the Guidan Arna primary school has 220 students, including 103 girls. Currently, there are 4 classrooms made of straw and grass and one permanent classroom. Every year, the parents collect enough money to pay for a new grass roof. The entire school has a total of only 5 books for each classrooms. These books were also bought with a pool of money from the parents.
The Evangelical Church of Niger (EERN) has a presence in the village and they, along with the public school, approached Remember Niger to request our help with improving the school. After a year of thoughtful consideration and prayer, we felt compelled to enter into partnership with the Guidan Arna school. We are thankful for this opportunity to partner with the EERN and a public school in a difficult-to-reach village. It is impressive that the school is accomplishing so much, despite the fact that they have so little. Construction of the 3 primary school classrooms will break ground in summer 2023 and the building will be completed this fall. The building will be inclusive, incorporating a a user-friendly, child-friendly design which benefits all students, including adolescent girls, sick children and children with disabilities. Constructing new classrooms will meet an immediate need and allow children to attend school in a safe and nurturing environment. Please donate today. |
New floors and ceilings - Koira Kano Primary School
The Koira Kano School opened its doors on October 1, 1998. In the fall of 2023, Remember Niger constructed 3 new classrooms to better accommodate the ever-growing student population. The current school now consists of 3 buildings containing 10 classrooms. The older 7 classrooms are in desperate need of new concrete floors and ceilings to provide a safer learning environment for the students.
The floors, which are nearly 20 years old, were not constructed adequately with proper concrete and as a result have eroded over time creating large pits and holes. The ceilings are also in very poor condition and will be replaced. Please donate today. |
Latrines - Aguie Middle School
In 2022, the first 3 classrooms were constructed the Aguie Middle School, which was established adjacent to the Aguie Primary School. The middle school students are currently using the same latrines as the primary school students. More latrines are needed to accommodate all of the students. The project includes construction of 2 latrines for girls and 2 latrines for boys. It also includes wash stations for healthy hygiene practice. Please donate today.
